Established in 2010, Seishin-Ryu was founded not to become a large organisation, but to create a supportive community of martial artists united by a shared passion for traditional karate.
In 2012, we were honoured to welcome Sensei Shearer as the Honorary President, reinforcing our commitment to excellence and tradition.
With over 30 years of experience, Enfield Karate Club is proud to offer high-quality karate instruction to men, women, and children (7 years and above). Our training focuses on more than just fighting techniques—it promotes health, discipline, and character development.
Karate practice at our club helps improve:
We primarily teach the Shotokan style of karate, developed by Okinawan master Gichin Funakoshi, who introduced it to Japan in 1922.
Shotokan is now the most widely practised style of karate worldwide.
In addition to Shotokan, we also study and teach other traditional styles of karate, including Gōjū-ryū and Chitō-ryū which allows all students and instructors to gain a deeper understanding of karate’s rich heritage and technical variety.
To introduce and firmly establish karate-do as a structured and modern interpretation of the Japanese/Okinawan/Fujian martial arts
To continue studying, preserving and transmitting the correct history and original teachings of karate-do through it's history, culture and techniques
To promote public awareness and interest in karate-do and to encourage participation by all members of the community
To honour and preserve this important tradition and it's pioneers.
To help and assist those who need our support without reservation.
To teach the original teachings of kata through the Habitual Acts of Violence theory.
To promote peace, health and harmony through the practise of karate-do
To encourage friendly association with like minded groups and individuals
Gichin Funakoshi is the founder of Shotokan Karate-Do, perhaps the most widely known style of karate, and is known as a "father of modern karate".
Following the teachings of Anko Itosu and Anko Asato, he was one of the Okinawan karate masters who introduced karate to the Japanese mainland in 1922.
Masatoshi Nakayama was an internationally famous Japanese master of Shotokan karate.
He helped establish the Japan Karate Association (JKA) in 1949, and wrote many textbooks on karate, which served to popularise his martial art.
For almost 40 years, until his death in 1987, Nakayama worked to spread Shotokan karate around the world.
He was the first master in Shotokan history to attain the rank of 9th dan while alive, and was posthumously awarded the rank of 10th dan.
Hirokazu Kanazawa is a Japanese teacher of Shotokan karate. He is the Chief instructor and President of the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation, an organisation he founded after leaving the Japan Karate Association (JKA). Kanazawa is ranked 10th dan in karate.
The basic of Karate is "sport" and that is important.
But Karate as Budo (Martial Arts) is even more important.
As education for children.
As courage-catalyser for youth.
As disciplined and cultivated lifestyle for adults.
And good physical condition for the elderly.
Karate is so universally good, that's why I am doing it.
Hirokazu Kanazawa (金澤 弘和, Kanazawa Hirokazu, 3 May 1931 – 8 December 2019)
Sensei Perry trained extensively with renowned masters, including Yamaguchi, and made numerous journeys to Japan to deepen his understanding of karate.
His time spent training with Hirokazu Kanazawa had a profound impact—Kanazawa Sensei’s elegance and precision in movement shaped Sensei Perry’s lifelong dedication to the art.
As a direct student of Kanazawa, Sensei Perry stood as a third-generation karateka in a distinguished lineage that traces back to Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan and the pioneer who introduced karate to the West.
Sensei Paul Perry, 9th Dan (16th Feb 1950 - 22nd Feb 2014)
Sensei Barry Shearer has been training for over 40 years and teaching for over 30 years.
Sensei Kanazawa invited Sensei Shearer to accompany him to the Milan championships as a representative of one of Kanazawa Sensei's longest-running karate-ka.
